Visual artist – colour researcher
The ‘Voces intimae’ -paintings were exhibited together with the series ‘Aurore’ in 1991 at Galerie Artek. The title refers to a string quartet of the same title by Jean Sibelius. I sought a chamber-music-like, intimate quality in these paintings. They were also prompted by a desire to return to the possibilities afforded by brushwork and texture, which I had banished more or less entirely from my paintings during 1981-1991.
Like in ‘Aurore’, the composition and forms of these paintings repeat the shape of the canvas. In ‘Aurore’ my aim was to purge to painting of all “subject matter” except colour and mood. In the ‘Voces’ I endeavoured to depict a kind of resonant emptiness akin to some of the music of the Estonian composer Arvo Pärt.
